Something struck me there the other day.

A bus.

But besides that, I wondered to myself what happens to the general population of Tokyo-3 during the stories, and during the Angel attacks. I've been messing around with a few ideas based on this, and was wondering what ye out there would think. I was thinking of following the schoolchildren and their lives, through an ACC of some sort. Shinji and Co would be there, but sort of in the background.

The first couple of attacks would be terrifying, I'm thinking, because of the submarine effect of being below ground while theres a load of explosions going off overhead.

But, it would begin to become normal, burnt in by years of civil defence drills and the fact that nothing bad has really happened to any of them. Nobody's actually seen anybody get squished or blown sky-high....

Of course, slowly, families begin to leave the city, friends going away.

Yet, people are getting injured, and perhaps killed, lockers of friends who've left the city lie abandoned and empty. And after each battle, the number of empty lockers only goes up. After each battle, somebody comes to clear the new empties out...

And perhaps, they begin to wonder who the next empty locker will be?

This is one of those ideas that sounds good, but are unlikely to be very well received when actually written down. I've seen something like that passed around here and there (be it following a classmate, some random NERV techy,...) I had a similar (though pretty vague) idea myself once of having someone "normal" going through TI and ending up on the beach.
But lets face it: fanfic readers want their NGE cast in major positions, not as some background characters. At best it might work in a one-shot - a multi-chaptered fic is pretty much out of question though IMO.

I can see what you mean...

I suppose, I could pay 'lip-service' to the NGE cast. Maybe have it so that perhaps they're unaware of the what's going on around them...perhaps a little shielded from the real world. How isolted are they from the consequences of their actions? Maybe as a subplot, they could find a few things out...

Like Shinji when he got caught in that shelter when Zeruel attacked... hmmm.,..

Or, the whole idea could be used as a subplot to another story. Maybe if it were worked into a Shinji/OC pairing, with some girl in the class? A lot of it does seem too good to waste.

i personaly like the idea of hearing the NGE story told from the 'normal' point of view, but would probably lose interest after a few chapters.

If you're going to do it, make it short.
If you can't make the Eva characters part of it, I suggest you write the story outside the Eva-verse.

This idea seems like it has incredible potential, and to see it go to waste is quite grieving. Since I do not wish to see such an intriguing idea go to waste I'd like to offer my opinion.

I do believe, Dartz, that this idea could be carried out as you originally stated with the main characters used in a supporting role, however, to fully bring it to the paramount of the concepts potential you would have to make the ACC's incredibly strong characters to stand on their own in a predefined world in the lead positions.

By strong of course I mean that they will have to give that feeling of reality and humanity that requires a subtle but strong understanding of things from the author. You have done some decent work before though, Dartz, so I really believe  that you could bring the characters to life.

Also, since it's been a very long time since I've posted here, forgive me if you already took off with this idea  Grin.

- peace out

P.S. if you've given up on this one, do you mind if I give it a whirl? It really is too much of a good thing to waste.

Go ahead..

The whole point behind the web is the free exchange of ideas after all, isn't it? I wasn't going to do that fic outright... I have trouble dealing with decent OC's... but parts of it might show up in my SI as a sort of side-plot...

Honestly, I think a Nevada branch story would be interesting. You get to know the people and all that you inevitably know how it's gonna end, which could make the whole thing more poignant.

well it's not a tragic, poignant end, they just accidentally vaporize themselves. it's like a Gundam death scene.

and I wouldn't care about someone I know is going to die anyway

It would be interesting to see the school kids organising a  'dead pool' over who's gonna cop it next from an incident in an attack or move away.
